Welcome aboard Battle River Lending Place. There are moments in life when you realize you’ve stepped aboard something meaningful; not just a project, but a purpose. For me, joining the Battle River Lending Place Society felt exactly like that.
From the moment I first connected with the team, I could sense a quiet strength at the heart of the organization; a mission anchored in compassion, generosity, and service. What began as building them a WordPress website soon became something much deeper: a shared voyage toward making accessibility and dignity tangible in our community.
I picture the Lending Place as a sturdy ship sailing the seas of purpose. At the helm stands our President, Erhard Pinno, steady and wise, guiding with calm conviction. Beside him is Julie Girard, our Executive Director, her bright smile full of warmth and momentum, charting the course ahead with grace and resolve.
But no ship sails alone. Every crew member brings their own skill and spirit to the voyage. Our Vice President, Cliff Drever, lends thoughtful insight and leadership. Secretary, Susan Nigh, keeps the details and communications shipshape. Treasurer, Leona Calhoon, ensures our resources are managed with care and transparency.
There’s also Tom Calhoon, whose hands-on dedication shines in so many unseen ways; from volunteering at events like the pickleball tournament to teaching our summer student how to drive. And Garth Erick, whose tireless efforts in organizing equipment, repairing mobility aids, and helping set up the Lending Place from day one have been nothing short of foundational. His work helped transform an empty space into a beacon of hope and function for our community.
Then there’s the wider crew: Susan Stockall, Mary Broen, Chad Treleaven, Jane Ross, Dwayne Falk, and Glenys Smith; each contributing time, insight, and heart. Their teamwork and perseverance reflect the very soul of this organization: people helping people, powered by compassion and community spirit.
Over time, the crew has changed. Dwayne Falk is no longer on the board, and neither is Tom Calhoun, though Tom still generously lends a hand when needed. Carrie-Ann Pederson has become our indispensable cleaning guru, keeping the equipment organized and ready for use. Garth Erick has stepped back, but Brian Bekkeheim now shines as our repair master, while our newest volunteer, Len, has really rolled up his sleeves and jumped right in, bringing energy and dedication. Jane continues as a member-at-large, and the board is actively seeking new members to fill open positions, ensuring the ship sails strong into the future.
As for me, I’ve found my place somewhere on deck helping us find our way through the digital waters. From social media posts to website updates, content campaigns to email mail-outs, I’ve been honoured to help share the Lending Place message with the world.
It’s more than just managing posts, websites, or emails. It’s about giving voice to something that matters; a cause that helps people move, heal, and live with dignity. Every post, every photo, every email is like a message in a bottle; sent out to sea, guiding hearts back to the harbour of community.
I will remember the Under One Roof launch party; being among so many who believe in this vision, camera in hand, heart full. There was laughter, fellowship, and a deep sense that we were all part of something larger than ourselves.
I look at what we’ve built together; campaigns, events, and stories that reach people in Camrose and Battle River Region. I see more than digital results. I see lives connected, hope strengthened, and a team moving forward under full sail.
Thank you to every board member, volunteer, and supporter. Together, we’re navigating not-for-profit waters with courage and grace. And as for me, I’ll keep my eyes on the horizon and thankful for every “Aye aye, Captain” moment along the way.
